Back when I were a mere lad of fifteen, and the ladies running the village mobile library persistently promoted Virago Press books to my bemused self (two shelves in quite a small van, two short haircut librarians, I think I can rest my case) ...at any rate, I found Joanna Russ somewhere there, and somehow liked, no loved her stories, angry but not misanthropic. A great voice now lost, and this essay summons it back for me. Her and Carol Emshwiller and "James" Tiptree Jnr all wonderful writers - for men and for women both. Well, OK, perhaps especially for youse gals. But also for me.
Joanna Russ - like her stuff.. Sad she's dead.
